Come and learn about Quaker theology and whiteness with me online. From 3 June to 8 July I’m leading a 6-week online course, with live sessions every Monday at 19:00-20:30 (UK time). If you’ve enjoyed my writing on Quakers, whiteness and race in the past, then you’ll love this course.
Whiteness is a way of being in the world that privileges particular people, knowledge, and values. This challenging course explores the relationship of whiteness to theology, and how it has shaped Quaker beliefs in the last century.
This course will give you a deeper understanding of whiteness and its history within Christian European theology. After an introduction to whiteness, we’ll learn how white Christians understood Judaism and Islam in the 18th century, and Hinduism and Buddhism in the 19th century. This will give us the tools to critically approach Quaker theology in the 20th century.
Each week of the course will involve a live online session, where I’ll share thoughts from my current PhD research for you to discuss. This course draws on the work of Black and Critical White theologians, making their insights accessible to a non-academic audience. No work is required between each live session, but notes and reading lists will be provide for those who want to go deeper.
